Adrian Heskin had never ridden a winner at Ayr – admittedly he’d had only three previous rides at the track – but he put that right in style with a double.

It was highlighted by Portrush Ted, who overcame a 519-day layoff to land the 2m5½f handicap hurdle.

The performance was all the more creditable as Warren Greatrex’s fragile winner was carrying top weight and made most of the running to beat Grand Morning by two and a quarter lengths.
