'About time!' - Makety lands long-awaited maiden win for Oliver Sherwood
Switching to fences proved to be a shrewd decision for trainer Oliver Sherwood as Makety landed her maiden win under rules at Worcester.
The seven-year-old mare finished second over this course and distance on her chase debut in July before duly going one better in the 2m4f mares' handicap chase under Jonathan Burke.
"It's about time," Sherwood said of the winner, who was making her 12th start under rules. "She's such a lovely mare but just had bad luck. I half wish I'd put her over fences earlier as she jumps so well.
"Some of her hurdling form is pretty good as she was second to Epatante at Exeter, but you can't look back, you have to look forward in this game and she deserved the win."
The mare was just Sherwood's second runner since August. The Grand National-winning trainer had been easing into the new season after moving to the former yard of Charlie Mann after 37 years at Rhonehurst.
"I've purposely not had many this summer, we've just a handful of runners. The rest of the string are all gearing up for when we get rain. Everything we've run has placed, so I can't complain. Long may it continue."
Canyon City back business
Another horse benefitting from a switch to fences was Canyon City, who wound back the clock to claim his first success in over two years in the 2m7f handicap chase.
The eight-year-old, who last won over hurdles in May 2019, prevailed by a neck take his first chase win under Jack Quinlan on his second start over fences.
