As Sheikh Fahad returned to what passed for dry land after handing out the prizes following the Qatar Sussex Stakes, he uttered words that would have been supported by almost everyone on the racecourse.

"It's Glorious Goodwood," he said. "What's glorious about it?"

There was nothing glorious about it.
