'A National dream' - Slipway could bid to repeat owners' Aldaniti victory

Friday: Perth

For the family who owned Aldaniti, it ‘would be a dream’ if Slipway were to emulate the emotional 1981 Grand National victory after his Highland National win.

Nick Embiricos owned Aldaniti, and his family own Ben Pauling’s seven-year-old, who on only his fifth chase start, took up the running some way out under Luca Morgan and stayed on to record a two and a half-length victory.

Pauling said: “He jumped and travelled brilliantly the whole way. He didn’t miss a beat and did it quite nicely really.

“He ran a bit of an eyecatching race for me at Newbury last time out, he stayed on very nicely to finish fifth over two miles six furlongs. I just thought the extra distance would help him.”

After his staying credentials were put to the test over this 3m6½f, and Pauling’s performer being open to the utmost improvement, a possible tilt at the Aintree Grand National could be on the cards with owners who have such history in the race.

“He’s got to improve a fair bit," Pauling added. "If he went and won again next season, then it would be something that we would probably look at down the line.

“It’s early days, but for the owners – who are brilliant supporters of mine, they owned Aldaniti – it would be a dream for them to have a horse that does that again one day.”

Firsts all round

Jockey Patrick Wadge rode the first winner of his career at the 64th attempt under rules, after failing to win in points.

He partnered Lucinda Russel’s only runner on the card, Petite Rhapsody, who, in turn, broke his maiden at the 15th time of asking in the 2m4f novice handicap hurdle.

Hughes treble

Champion jockey Brian Hughes celebrated his title with a 32-1 treble on Parisencore for Nicky Richards, Into Overdrive for Mark Walford and Minella Trump for Donald McCain.
