'A legend' - jump jockey Derby joy for Best thanks to old favourite Berrahri

Berrahri, winner of the 2019 jump jockeys' Derby under Joey Haynes, was denied the chance to defend his crown due to the pandemic-related cancellation of last year’s race, but was not to be denied this time, surging down the centre of the course to win by a length under Tom Cannon.

An emotional winning trainer John Best was delighted after witnessing the ten-year-old win for the fourth time at the course and, following his first winner for more than a month, said: "He’s an absolute legend of a horse. He just continues to amaze me. I didn’t think he was capable to keep doing it all this time, I really didn’t.

"To still be winning at his age and the number of runs he’s had, the owners [White Turf Racing UK] are very lucky to have a horse like him. There can’t be many in the country who are his age and still winning races like that."

Regarding Cannon, who was winning the race for a second time, Best added: "Tom gave him a great ride, he did exactly what I asked him to do.

"He comes from Kent originally and he used to ride out for me a little bit when he was about 15 or 16. Dave Roberts [agent] was on the phone to me saying, ‘Use Tom, he’s the one', so credit to him as well."

Double for Marquand

Tom Marquand rode a quickfire double, first guiding the James Fanshawe-trained Knowing to a narrow success in the 1m2f handicap before partnering Hughie Morrison’s inmate Curtiz in the 1m½f handicap.
