Reigate trainer Ted Powell dies aged 74

Ted Powell, who bred and trained dual Portland winner Hello Mister, has died at his Reigate home at the age of 74.

Powell was a neighbour of Jack O'Donoghue, who trained for the Queen Mother and sent out 1951 Grand National winner Nickel Coin from his Reigate stables.

Hello Mister won both the 1994 and 1995 Portland at Doncaster in the name of O'Donoghue, but Powell masterminded the training and brought the sprinter to the races.

Powell said at the time: "To keep the Jockey Club happy he was registered under Jack’s second yard, although he never saw the horse except on a Sunday!"

When O'Donoghue died in 1996, Powell took out a licence to run Hello Mister and later trained Ajjaadd for Katy and Lol Pratt to win ten races as well as finishing second in the 2014 Stewards' Cup.

Lol Pratt said: "He ran for us in Dubai after the Stewards' Cup but Ted didn't like to leave Reigate – even going to Goodwood was far enough for him!

"He had a knack with sprinters. I bought Ajjaadd from Godolphin for 2,400gns and Ted sent him sprinting and won all those races."

Powell was particularly shrewd with sprinters and got the nickname of the 'one-horse trainer' as he never had more than a handful of horses.

Powell, whose last winner was Snow King at Lingfield in November 2015, is survived by his wife Sandra, daughter Jane and son William.

His funeral is at Crawley Crematorium at 1.30pm on Monday 20 March.
