Slice of history: the Aintree racecourse horse ambulance is due to go to auction

The Grand National is a race steeped in history and on Saturday racing fans will have the chance to acquire a four-wheeled slice of it, as Howard Pugh auctioneers are selling a fully functional 1930s Tophams Ltd Aintree Racecourse horse ambulance.

Howard Pugh, auctioning the trailer on behalf of racehorse owner Robin Phillips, said on Friday: "I've never sold anything like it. It's a lovely thing."

On its condition, he said: "It's still working, it still runs and drives, it's safe to use and looks totally sound. I'm not sure many people would want to use it practically though.

"There aren't many models left like it at all, and with the carriage on it, it's totally unique. I'd estimate we're going to get around £12,000 to £15,000 for it."

Pugh added: "Mr Phillips is selling his property, he's downsizing, that's why it is being sold."

The auction takes place at 10am at Retreat Farm, Grimley in Worcestershire, and bids can be made online here. The horse ambulance is lot 276.
