A radical proposal to curb the powers of the BHA appeared to have split the sport down the middle on Monday, with the backing of trainers not guaranteed and many in the industry caught out by the potentially explosive move.

The ground-breaking plan is due to be presented to the BHA board on Tuesday with racecourses and horsemen seeking a more powerful position on non-regulatory and commercial decision making.

Mark Johnston, the most successful trainer in British racing history, feels action needs to be taken to tackle the huge problem around the sport’s funding structure, but is far from convinced all horsemen are supportive of the proposal revealed exclusively in the Racing Post on Monday.
