The Pentagon, 10-1 favourite for the Investec Derby, could bow out for the season in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster next month according to trainer Aidan O'Brien.

The son of Galileo created a big impression when winning a seven-furlong maiden at the Curragh in July by eight and a half lengths on his second start, making all under Ana O'Brien.

He followed up over the same trip in the Group 3 JRA Tyros Stakes at Leopardstown when ridden by Ryan Moore, who has described The Pentagon as the most exciting Ballydoyle juvenile colt he has ridden this year.

O'Brien said: "The Pentagon will have another run this season and we're looking at the Racing Post Trophy or possibly the Dewhurst for him."

Two of O'Brien's seven winners of the Racing Post Trophy – High Chaparral and Camelot – went on to land the Derby.

Outlining plans for some of his other juvenile colts, O'Brien nominated the Dewhurst Stakes as the intended target for Gustav Klimt, the winner of two of his three starts.

Gustav Klimt is 7-1 second favourite for the Qipco 2,000 Guineas and 14-1 for the Derby. The Ballydoyle trainer has landed the Dewhurst on five occasions, with Rock Of Gibraltar and Churchill going on to win the 2,000 Guineas.

After overcoming trouble in running to take the Group 2 bet365 Superlative Stakes at Newmarket in July, Gustav Klimt was due to run in the Group 1 National Stakes at the Curragh last Sunday only to miss the race when reported to have sustained a stone bruise.

"The Dewhurst is the plan for Gustav Klimt, who is a colt who appreciates good or faster ground, "O'Brien said.

However, Amedeo Modigliani, who is joint second favourite with Gustav Klimt for the Derby, will not race again this year. O'Brien said: "We've decided to put Amedeo Modigliani away until next season."

After finishing strongly for third place behind Gustav Klimt over seven furlongs on his debut at the Curragh in July, Amedeo Modigliani went on to win a mile maiden by five and a half lengths at the Galway festival last month.
