The Dikler, like everyone else, has been shocked and appalled by the brawls which have taken place at Goodwood and Ascot over the past couple of weeks.

While unedifying, it has long been pointed out that racecourses have not always been safe havens when it comes to good, clean fun – with unruly behaviour not necessarily uncommon.

An example of this came in the Times last weekend, when former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg discussed an unsavoury incident at the Cheltenham Festival one year.
