A modern-day record crowd for Newmarket’s July meeting was on Sunday being toasted by the track, with nearly 40,000 attending over the three days.

Almost 15,000 saw Limato land the July Cup on Saturday, while there were close to 17,000 through the gates for ladies’ day on Thursday, both records for the individual days based on figures available since 1989.

The numbers are hard evidence the meeting has steadily grown in popularity with racegoers since switching to a Thursday to Saturday schedule from an exclusively midweek slot.
