Quinn turns to emerging apprentice Sean Davis for Mistiroc Cambridgeshire ride

Sean Davis, the apprentice who landed a major handicap success on Irish Champions Weekend in 2016, will have his first big British ride after being confirmed for Mistiroc in the bet365 Cambridgeshire at Newmarket on Saturday.

Davis, who is based with Ger Lyons, also rode a double at the Galway festival last year and Mistiroc's trainer John Quinn is delighted to have secured his services, especially as the duo sealed a signature success with Safe Voyage in the €100,000 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Ahonoora Handicap at Galway this summer.

Mistiroc, owned by Drew and Ailsa Russell, returned from a year off at Epsom last month, a run that pleased connections.

"He's been declared and I'm happy with him," said Quinn, who has a big day at Newmarket on Saturday with Royal Ascot winner Signora Cabello running in the Group 1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes.

"He picked up an injury a year and a half ago, so was off for a long time before Epsom, but we were pleased with how he ran," the trainer added on At The Races. "The form of the race has worked out and we're bringing over Sean Davis, a good apprentice with my friend Ger Lyons.

"He claims 5lb and is a very good lad, so we think we've got a chance. The ground at Epsom for Mistiroc was marginal; it rained on the day. He coped with it, but will prefer the better ground on Saturday."

Davis, 19, who has had just three rides in Britain, was bitten by the bug at trainer Sean Mahon's yard in County Meath before heading to Race, the jockeys' academy in Ireland.

He linked up with Michael O'Callaghan and Harry Rogers and enjoyed a breakthrough moment as a 7lb claimer when Maudlin Magdalen won a premier handicap at the Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend two years ago.

Further headlines came at Galway last term when he struck on Perfect Soldier and Remarkable Lady, while he spent the winter with Satish Seemar in Dubai, partnering one winner – Invincible Strike at Jebel Ali – from 50 rides.

Davis enjoyed his first winner on the O'Callaghan-trained Maknificent at Leopardstown in June 2016.

The Group 1 Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes also takes place on Saturday at Newmarket and Ten Sovereigns, the unbeaten Ballydoyle buzz horse, will face seven rivals including Emaraaty Ana, Legends Of War and Jash.
