After dominating her country for so long and becoming something of a national icon, Winx further boosted her profile last month by being named joint best racehorse in the world.

While the decision was met with scepticism in Britain, with some damning the mare with faint praise, it was applauded in Australia where her fan club is vast, to say the least.

And such fandom means those true believers are prepared to act big to prove their adoration and affection – such as placing a small fortune on the wondermare to remain unbeaten for a little while longer.
