This is the moment.

Even in normal times the return of racing at Cheltenham is excellent cause for celebration. Right now it feels like a turning point, a reason for rejoicing but also for relief. The past has been wretched and the future remains uncertain. As we prepare to savour the gift of a Saturday with crowds at the sport's most cherished home, let us gratefully bask in the present.

Just before noon on Friday a long line of devotees queued outside the main Hall of Fame entrance, desperate to be reunited with a place that, for the vast majority, had been forbidden ground for 19 months. Old friends embraced on the steppings and then, as Mark Johnson announced the start of the opening novice hurdle, there was the hint of a roar and warm applause. There was plenty more of it for Camprond as he entered the winner's enclosure carrying the famous silks of JP McManus.
