Williams hoping her in-form chaser Jazz can hit right note again

Kap Jazz goes in search of a hat-trick having hit a rich vein of form on his last two starts.

The Venetia Williams-trained seven-year-old got off the mark over fences at Carlisle last month before following up in a novice handicap chase at Ludlow. He now runs off a 13lb higher mark than for the first of those two wins.

Most of his rivals are more exposed, with Bindon Mill, a wide-margin Exeter winner when last seen in January, the only other horse in the line-up to have scored last time out.

Happy on Haldon Hill

Bindon Mill, who took five goes to record a victory at this testing venue, is not the only course winner in the field. Court By Surprise and Themanfrom Minella both hold a 100 per cent record at Exeter, having scored on their sole outings at the track.

In-form trainers

Venetia Williams and Philip Hobbs, who saddles Bertie Boru, go into the race with their strings in decent form. Before racing on Monday Williams had sent out six winners from 35 runners in the past fortnight, while Hobbs's statistics were four winners (including JCB Triumph Hurdle hero Defi Du Seuil) from 31 runners over the same period.

He has the ability but it's a case of getting him to pull it out. He's also never been the soundest horse but he seems in good order now. I pulled him out of a race at Ffos Las on Sunday because the ground had turned horribly soft and I do hope they don't get much rain at Exeter. He was wrong last time, so you can draw a line through that run.

He lacked confidence earlier in his career but his confidence has now grown, as we've seen on the racecourse. A drop of rain would help him.

He had a bruised foot and it took time to come right, which is why he hasn't run for a while. He's in good order now and remains unexposed. I'm very happy to keep him to a good novices' track like Exeter.

He was unlucky last time as he came out worst in a sandwich incident. I don't think anyone could have stayed on him. He was going fine at the time and he's in good form now. He won at Exeter last year as well.

He stays well and the better ground might help him, too.
