Few bumpers are as informative as this one at Newbury, which has produced a fine flock of graduates over the past ten years with a number of horses going on to win at Graded level.

The likes of Al Ferof (2010), Definitly Red (2014) and Ballyandy (2016) are among the star-studded list of winners, while Barters Hill bested Buveur D'Air and Altior in the 2015 edition. Tea For Two is another that was beaten in recent years.

At the head of the betting for this year's contest is the Olly Murphy-trained Champagnesuperover, who cantered to a commanding 16-length victory at Ayr on his only start to date.

Murphy thinks highly of the son of Jeremy but is concerned by the drying ground, which was officially described as good, good to soft in places on Friday.

The trainer said: "I would probably need to see a little bit of overnight rain for me to run him. I think he wants a description of soft at this stage."

It is a similar story for Adrimel, who cruised to a 26-length success at Uttoxeter in December for Tom Lacey.

He will walk the course on Saturday before making a decision on whether he will run Adrimel, and said: "I'm very nervous of the drying ground. All his form is on soft or heavy ground."

The Dan Skelton-trained Wilde About Oscar won well at Warwick last time and was beaten only three-quarters of a length by Ask A Honey Bee on his debut run. The form of that race has since worked out, with that five-year-old winning twice since.

Skelton said: "He’s a lovely horse, won very well at Warwick but takes on a different type of animal in this and it’s a very deep race."

Getaround won at Chepstow last time and is trainer Ella Pickard's only winner to date. She said: "I think a lot of this horse but a bumper is certainly not his future, you’ll see the best of him chasing."

Roger Teal expects the drying ground to suit Ocean Wind, while the Warren Greatrex-trained Audacity opened his bumper account at Cheltenham last month.
