Who will excel in testing conditions in tribute to a legendary trainer?

It's fitting that this race could turn into a test of stamina on soft ground because it is run in memory of Peter Beaumont, who is probably best known for training old-fashioned chasing types who often revelled in such conditions.

Beaumont's most famous horse was Jodami and the 1993 Gold Cup winner was more versatile than just a soft-ground performer. But he was certainly an old-fashioned chasing type and that is a description that fits Adrimel down to a tee.

Trainer Tom Lacey said as much in last season's Racing Post stable tour and the seven-year-old, who is "built for chasing" according to his trainer, won two of his five chases last campaign.

The two wins came on soft and heavy ground at Haydock, so the return to those conditions will suit Adrimel, and this will be easier than the races he contested at the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals in the spring.

Knickerbockerglory made a successful start to his chasing career at Ffos Las this month, but he beat only one rival so the value of the form is open to question.

A testing surface appears to suit Knickerbockerglory and he looks sure to improve for his initial experience of chasing, but this represents a big step up in class at an early stage for him over fences.

No Risk Des Flos is unbeaten in two starts at Wetherby, but three of his four highest Racing Post Ratings have been achieved with good in the going description so, if there is to be an upset, maybe it will come from Joke Dancer or Golden Whisky.

Both handle cut in the ground and Sue Smith's yard appears to be returning to form, so maybe Joke Dancer can do the same.

What they say

Tom Lacey, trainer of Adrimel
He’s unbeaten on heavy ground over two miles. He’s also run well off a break previously, so we feel confident.

Dan Skelton, trainer of Knickerbockerglory
He definitely has a good chance and the softer the ground the better for him. It has eased to soft, heavy in places but that won't bother him.

Rebecca Menzies, trainer of Sao
We were disappointed with his comeback run at Aintree. He got a little bit wound up during the race and ran with the choke out and we might just change tactics. He’s won over course and distance so, if we can get him back on track, he should be competitive.

Olly Murphy, trainer of No Risk Des Flos
He came out of Chepstow well and looks to have a good each-way chance. He’s got a good record at Wetherby.
