Shantou Rock bids to add his name to an illustrious list of former winners on his first attempt in Graded company.

The five-year-old made an impressive start to chasing when beating one of his rivals here, The Unit, by nine lengths at Newton Abbot but could not follow up when second to Ozzie The Oscar at Warwick.

Nevertheless, he is officially the highest-rated runner in a race won previously by Altior, Dodging Bullets, Simonsig, Sprinter Sacre and Riverside Theatre.

Trainer Dan Skelton said: "He's the highest rated of these and beat The Unit in the autumn. It was an okay run at Warwick but not quite at the same level as Newton Abbot. I'm very happy with him and he goes there with an obvious chance."

Paul Nicholls has covered the weather eventualities by declaring two horses, one who will handle good ground and another who enjoys it soft.

"The more it rains the better for Cyrname and the less it rains the more it suits Tommy Silver," he said. "Tommy Silver does have form on soft but he wouldn't want it to rain too much.

"Cyrname would like it nice and testing to bring his stamina into play. Tommy Silver didn't run badly on soft last time, but he's slightly better on better ground."

Will The Unit be up to size?

The Unit has yet to win over fences but has the advantage of having kept much better company.

Last season, he finished a good third behind Pingshou in the Grade 1 Top Novices' Hurdle at Aintree, and followed his second to Shantou Rock with a third behind Willoughby Court at Huntingdon.

Trainer Alan King said: "The Unit learned to settle last season and signed off with an excellent third in a Grade 1 at Aintree.

"He's run two solid races since returning from his summer break and ran a smashing race when third to Willoughby Court in early November, so hopefully he'll build on that in the Wayward Lad."
