Which horses have benefited from overnight rain at the Curragh?
The going at the Curragh on Saturday morning changed to yielding on the straight course and good to yielding on the round course (from good, good to firm in places) after 9mm of rain overnight. Here are three horses who will be suited by the ease in the ground . . .
Camphor 4.45 Curragh
Jessica Harrington bids for Irish Oaks success with Cayenne Pepper and could make a good start on the undercard with Camphor in the Group 2 Comer Group International Curragh Cup.
This four-year-old filly is winless in four starts on good ground but boasts form figures of 114 on good to yielding or yielding.
She handled extremely testing conditions earlier this month when second to Pondus on heavy ground in the Lenebane Stakes at Roscommon but these conditions suit her best and she may be overpriced at 12-1 in this six-runner contest.
Sonnyboyliston 5.15 Curragh
Good ground or quicker would have been a concern for this 1m2f handicap favourite so the overnight rain is certainly in his favour.
The Johnny Murtagh-trained Sonnyboyliston has raced on yielding, soft and heavy in five starts and has come into his own in handicap company this term.
He was a ready winner on his handicap debut at Gowran Park then was third in a premier handicap at Navan, from which winner Delphi has gone on to strike at Listed level. Sonnyboyliston looks the one to beat with Ben Coen claiming a valuable 3lb.
Passion 7.15 Curragh
Passion’s peak effort on Racing Post Ratings came when third in the Ribblesdale on good to soft so the overnight rain brings her into the Irish Oaks equation.
Billy Lee’s mount for Aidan O’Brien has been beaten in three starts on good or good to firm but won a Cork maiden on yielding and clearly relishes a bit of give underfoot.
She has plenty to find with the market leaders on official ratings but is an each-way price at 12-1 in this eight-runner renewal.
