Today marks the start of the three-day Brighton August festival. If you have never been to the course, one of the most unique in Britain, you really should make a visit - it is worth the drive.

The view from the top of the grandstand is as impressive on your first trip as your most recent, and if you follow Tony Carroll's horses you probably won't go far wrong.

The feature race on this afternoon's eight-race card is the £20,000 Hobgoblin Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy (3.20) with Sylvester Kirk hoping for back-to-back wins with topweight Cricklewood Green. Carroll is represented by Admirable Art and Pour La Victoire in the main event, while stablemate De Vegas Kid looks to have strong claims in division one of the 6f210y handicap (4.50).

Racing also takes place at Bath and Pontefract this afternoon, while meetings at Yarmouth, Kempton and Sligo grace television screens this evening.

What's on today

Entries for one of the biggest days on the Flat racing calendar are released today as the ante-post markets for Champions Day at Ascot will become slightly clearer. Acceptors for the Ebor at York this month will also be announced, so ante-post punters need to stay on racingpost.com for all the latest news.

Our man in Newmarket, David Milnes, will be on the gallops this morning, with his latest offering from HQ set to be online this afternoon.

What to back

Dave Orton has four selections across the cards in Britain, while Richard Forristal pinpoints the value at Sligo this evening. Find out the nap of the day from our regional experts here.

What to read

It was announced yesterday that Hayley Turner will be in the saddle at Ascot's Shergar Cup meeting on Saturday, while there was also news of a shake up in the novice chase system, which was welcomed by Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson. Does our reporter Keith Melrose feel it is a good move?

Looking forward to the Brighton August festival? Read all about the scenic seaside Sussex track, as well as a preview of the main race on the first day.

What to watch

The best of Racing Post Sport

Steve Davies predicts a positive result for Aston Villa against Colchester in the EFL Cup this evening. Steve Palmer offers his punting pearls for the final Major of the year - the USPGA Championship.

Final thought

Multiple Group-race scorer Fanunalter and this season's John Smith's Cup victor Ballet Concerto are among the notable former winners of the mile maiden at Kempton (6.35) this evening. Jus Pires, Ancient Foe and Shadow Beauty have all shown ability and should be involved in the finish in what might prove an informative event.
