Buried in the Paddy Power Gold Cup's roll of honour over the last 15 years or so is a clue to how the modern top-class chaser is campaigned.

In the second half of the 2000s future stars Our Vic, Exotic Dancer and Imperial Commander won three out of four runnings. The years that followed, an era which ended roughly when Caid Du Berlais became the most recent five-year-old winner in 2014, were somewhat transitional. Al Ferof won in 2012, but Long Run was beaten in 2011 just four months before he won the Gold Cup.
