One of the key talking points after the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle every year is the winning time. First, it can give us an idea of just how good the winner might be but second, and probably most importantly, the time is the best gauge of how the ground might be riding.

In the past it was commonplace for the festival to be run on what was generally termed ‘spring ground’ and conditions would rarely be any worse than good to soft, often quicker.
