Top jockey James Doyle and Sky presenter Simon Mapletoft on the weekend's action
Tom Collins, Keith Melrose and Chad Yeomans round off our expert panel
What is your view on the Irish Derby?
Tom Collins, tipster Understandably it looks pretty weak, as shown by the fact that Irish 2,000 Guineas fifth Fiscal Rules is fourth in the market despite being a maiden. Santiago deserves to be favourite after his Queen’s Vase victory, but he was said to be rock-hard fit that day and further improvement isn’t necessarily likely. At the prices I like Sherpa, who will improve for the step up in trip and ran a nice prep in the Gallinule.
James Doyle, jockey It will be interesting to see how Aidan O’Brien’s pair Santiago and Arthur’s Kingdom back up so soon after Royal Ascot in what is a wide-open race. It could be worth taking a chance on Joseph O’Brien’s runner Crossfirehurricane. He’s by Kitten’s Joy and hit the line well enough over a mile and a quarter there last time to suggest he’ll get the trip and he looked a tad green that day.
Simon Mapletoft, Sky Sports Racing Aidan O’Brien views favourite Santiago as a St Leger/Cup horse and has expressed concerns that this may come too soon after his win over further in the Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot. Stablemate Arthur’s Kingdom ran a super race at the same meeting, finding only Derby hope Pyledriver too strong in the King Edward VII, and looks a better value alternative in first-time cheekpieces.
