Tonight's racing: horses who catch the eye this evening

There are three meetings tonight from Ripon, Windsor and Roscommon, where the Listed Lenebane Stakes (8.25) is the highlight.

Three to watch

Shifting Star7.35 Windsor
Trainer John Bridger is legendary for the longevity of his horses, headed by the evergreen 16-year-old Megalala, and despite being in his shadow at the age of 12, Shifting Star has also shown that he still has a zest for success.

It's hard to believe that he made his racecourse debut for the late Walter Swinburn at this track ten years and a month ago – almost as much water has flowed under the bridge at the trackside Thames since with tonight being his 146th career race.

Shifting Star has shown himself a course lover with four of his 17 wins and plenty of placings under regular rider William Carson coming at the track, including the latest last month that saw his rating raised 4lb.

This mile handicap has been dominated by three-year-olds in recent years and Shifting Star faces three among his six rivals.

Crushed
7.45 Ripon

If statistics could be trusted Crushed would nearly be past the post for owner Brian Haggas, his trainer son William, and jockey Ben Curtis in this middle-distance handicap.

This cheaply-bought gelding has an abundance of stamina in her pedigree – her dam is related to Harris Tweed, who did well for this owner-trainer combination over this sort of trip.

Back to the stats, when Haggas and Curtis team up they have won 19 of their 49 races. Haggas, who enjoys winners in his home county, especially at York where this horse debuted, has sent 44 runners to Ripon in the last five years and 16 have won.

8.25 Roscommon

The best race on Monday is saved until near the end as this Listed race at Roscommon is full of intrigue and class. The weekend could have gone better for Aidan O’Brien but compensation could await with this half-brother to Godolphin’s 1,000 Guineas winner, Blue Bunting.

British racegoers did not see the real Exemplar under Ryan Moore in the Dante at York, form of which is looking quite strong two months later.

He was a big disappointment as the 6-1 joint third favourite though, never threatening on his only start this year.

But at two, he was third in the Beresford to stablemate and this year’s Irish Derby winner Capri – showing his high level of ability – and he would not be the first O’Brien-trained three-year-old to improve dramatically for a run.
