Thundering Home becomes the latest to reach milestone

The Richard Mitchell-trained Thundering Home will face the starter for the 100th time in his career when contesting the Thomas And Young Handicap Hurdle (4.40) at Worcester on Monday.

Mixing Flat racing with jumping over the seasons, the ten-year-old showed he was as sprightly as ever back in April when making much of the running in a handicap hurdle at Exeter to land his 14th career success.

He started his career as a two-year-old with Ed Dunlop in 2009 and had spells in the care of Michael Attwater, Brian Ellison and George Baker before joining Mitchell’s Dorset yard in 2012.

Mitchell said: “He was originally bought privately for owners James and Katy Boughey for their eldest son George – who is now assistant to Hugo Palmer – to ride in a charity Flat race at Newbury, with younger brother, William, taking over in the saddle the following year.

Five wind operations

“He's had five wind operations since, so things haven't been that straightforward with him, but since we've had him he's won nine races and been placed in the first four more than 50 per cent of the time.

"He has his quirks at home and on the racecourse but has given connections an amazing amount of fun over the years and we're all very proud of him.”

Asked to sum up Thundering Home’s chance in the Worcester contest, Mitchell added: ”It would be great to see him record his tenth success for us, but it's a very competitive race, with 11 horses taking him on, and they all look to have some sort of chance on paper. As long as he runs his race we'll all be pleased.”
