Thriving Just Glamorous among runners chasing valuable prizes on Tuesday
A rejuvenated Just Glamorous will bid to follow up his surprise Listed success at Ascot ten days ago with a victory in one of two £25,000 features at Leicester on Tuesday.
Things had not been going well for the four-year-old, a Group 3 winner in France in September last year, but a mid-season breathing operation appears to have turned his fortunes around and trainer Ron Harris now believes Just Glamorous is as well as he has ever been.
"We thought there was something wrong with him after he ran at Ascot in July, so we had him checked out and we found there was an issue, which we had dealt with," said Harris.
"I was over the moon with his run at Newbury considering it had been only five weeks since the operation. He came on from that and did the job nicely at Ascot. He is probably even better now."
Last year's winner of the 5f contest (3.30), Mirza, is among those taking on Just Glamorous and Oisin Murphy on Tuesday, along with the Group 1-winning veteran Goldream and Vibrant Chords for the in-form Henry Candy and Ryan Moore.
"These are the sort of horses we will have to deal with now but the horse is in great shape," said Harris. "My only worry is the ground; I wouldn't want it to dry out too much."
Lightly-raced Emmaus back at scene of debut win
Half an hour earlier in the day's other £25,000 contest, a 7f handicap (3.00), the lightly-raced Emmaus sticks out in the field against some battle-hardened rivals on what will be his first start in almost exactly a year.
The son of Invincible Spirit, who was bought for €580,000 as a yearling, made a winning debut at Leicester last September before finishing fourth behind 2,000 Guineas third Al Wukair in a Deauville Listed contest 362 days ago.
Absent since, the now three-year-old will make a belatedly seasonal debut in a race which also sees Via Via return from a lengthy absence chasing a long-range hat-trick.
Veteran Custom Cut has been declared with a visor for the first time in search of a first win since May, while Sir Dancealot also arrives on something of a retrieval mission after some disappointing results, most recently when sixth behind Aclaim in the Park Stakes at Doncaster last month.
Thornton back in the saddle
Elsewhere on Tuesday, Andrew Thornton makes his return to the saddle at Worcester after almost ten months on the sidelines, riding the same horse on which he achieved his landmark 1,000th winner on Boxing Day.
Thornton and Kentford Myth team up once again in the 2m4f mares' handicap hurdle (3.40), a race that had been due to take place at Hereford but will instead be staged at its sister track after the fixture was switched due to concerns over the ground at Hereford.
The most valuable race on the card is the £20,000 2m4f mares' handicap chase (2.40), a qualifier for the Challenger Mares' Chase, in which Pemba will bid to break a run of two runner-up finishes for Persian War-winning trainer Fergal O'Brien.
King pair ready to go
There is jumping too at Huntingdon, where Alan King will introduce Desiremoi D'Authie, a winner of his sole French Flat outing, in what looks a winnable 2m novice hurdle (3.20).
King is also represented in the most valuable race on the card, the £10,000 2m7½f novice chase (4.20), in which his Dingo Dollar makes a first start of the season, having won commandingly at Fontwell when last seen in April.
Show must go on at Kempton
In the evening, racing returns to Kempton for the first time since the tragic death of Amanda Perrett's groom Ken Dooley on Saturday, and the mood will inevitably be a reflective one.
This card's most valuable race is a 5f handicap (5.45) worth £11,500, in which Alsvinder will bid to follow up his victory at Chelmsford a little less than three weeks ago.
