Sir Michael Stoute’s Group 2 winner has been gelded following two below-par efforts this campaign and if the operation has had a positive effect the son of Sea The Stars should take plenty of beating in the Listed August Stakes.

Successful in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot last year, Across The Stars ran with great credit when third to Idaho in the Great Voltigeur at York on what proved his final start in 2016.

The four-year-old takes a marked drop in grade after failing to land a serious blow in the Al Rayyan Stakes and Hardwicke Stakes this season and a first-time hood is also enlisted. Better can be expected.

The Derby came too soon for Hugo Palmer’s three-year-old after an early-season setback, but the mere fact the son of Azamour was being considered for the Classic suggests he is held in high regard.

Last season’s Royal Lodge winner reappeared in the King Edward VII Stakes, trailing in last, then finished third in the Steventon Stakes on extremely testing ground that most probably did not suit at Newbury.

If the Godolphin-owned colt returns to anywhere near the pick of his juvenile form with drying ground to suit, he can bounce back in a select yet open renewal of the Group 3 Winter Hill Stakes.

4,3,2,UR,5,6,3 — Idaho’s Group 1 form figures miss that all-important digit, but there is a good chance he will gain an inaugural Grade 1 win in the Sword Dancer Stakes.

Highland Reel’s brother has not had fortune on his side at the highest level, most notably with that infamous, and admittedly harsh, ‘UR’ coming in the St Leger last year.

The dual Group 2 winner, whose latest victory at that level came in the Hardwicke Stakes in June, ran another fine race when third behind Enable and Ulysses in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot — form that gives him outstanding claims, although he does have to reverse last year's Canadian International running with Erupt.
