The one race you do not want to miss on Sunday
4.00 Pontefract
Pontefract Castle Fillies Stakes (Listed) | 1m4f, 4yo+ | RTV
Why is it interesting?
The in-form Bayshore Freeway is set for a quick reappearance after landing a six-runner handicap at Chelmsford on Tuesday and faces seven rivals as she bids to gain further black type.
The Mark Johnston-trained filly has enjoyed a productive season already, registering three wins and a Group 3 place in her last four starts.
She made nearly all the running when seeing off useful pair Lady Bergamot and Highgarden last time, but will surely be challenged for position by the promising John Gosden-trained Hameem.
Gosden won this race in 2014 with Freedom's Gift, and now saddles this four-year-old daughter of Teofilo who ran out an impressive three-and-a-half-length winner of a handicap over this trip at Newmarket last month.
Other interest in the contest comes from Crystal Moonlight, who represents the Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore combination – the pair were successful in this race with Abingdon in 2017.
What do the stats say?
Favourites have a decent record with two of the last four market leaders successful.
Roger Fell and Ben Curtis boast an excellent 43 per cent strike-rate when teaming up with runners at Pontefract. The pair join forces with Tamreer in this contest, who won over two furlongs shorter at Newcastle last time.
Royal Ascot winner Harry Bentley, who won this last season on Isabel De Urbina, partners Spirit Of Appin for Brian Meehan.
What do the trainers say?
Sir Michael Stoute, trainer of Crystal Moonlight
She's a filly we like and the plan is to get some black type with her.
Rae Guest, trainer of Dance Legend
The heavy ground didn't really suit anybody when she ran at Haydock last time. She's been in good form since and this race doesn't look as hot. The aim is black type.
Richard Hills, assistant racing manager to Hissa Hamdan Al Maktoum, owner of Hameem
She was really impressive when winning at Newmarket first time and has been training well since. She goes there with a favourite's chance and can hopefully get some black type.
Clive Cox, trainer of Hulcote
She won well last time but this is a big step up in class. She does not mind slow ground so if there are any thunderstorms around that would help.
Brian Meehan, trainer of Spirit Of Appin
She has a great chance. She won very well at Goodwood last time out and I think she's a Listed-class filly. I'm very happy with her and looking forward to a big run.
What do our tipsters say?
Spotlight: Richard Austen
Bayshore Freeway will be a tough nut to crack judged on her performances over 1m6f in handicaps and a Group 3, with the drop back in trip no great concern. However, the stylish reappearance wins over 1m4f by Hameem and Spirit Of Appin suggest that they are still capable of better and might just improve past her.
