The one race you can't afford to miss on Friday
7.10 Curragh
TRM-Excellence In Equine Nutrition Ballyogan Stakes (Group 3) | 6f | 3yo+ fillies | RTV
Why is it interesting?
It’s the acid test for Lethal Promise, who takes on her elders for the first time and is back in Group 3 company having contested Listed races on her last three starts.
A comprehensive winner at Cork last time on her seasonal return, she may need to improve again to fend off the likes of Dan’s Dream, who has been a frequent visitor to Ireland and will be seeking a first here on her fifth attempt.
Mick Channon’s filly is dropping in trip after losing out by a short head in the Athasi Stakes over seven furlongs at the same track on her most recent start early last month.
The other British challenger is the Kevin Ryan-trained Queen Jo Jo, the mount of Danny Tudhope, who won a Listed event at Nottingham on her most recent start last month.
The Eddie Lynam-trained Soffia steps up in trip following a Listed win over five furlongs at Naas last month.
.
What do the stats say?
Three-year-olds have won two of the four runnings of the race since it was moved to the Curragh in 2015. Ainippe was successful for Ger Lyons that year and Actress scored for Ballydoyle 12 months ago.
Representing the age group in this 12-runner renewal are Angelic Light, Lethal Promise, Mia Mento, Queen Jo Jo and Sakura.
What do the trainers say?
Michael O'Callaghan, trainer of Aurora Eclipse and Angelic Light
Hopefully the ground won't dry out too much as both of them like cut. Angelic Light is in great order but we probably won't see the best of her until she gets slow ground. Aurora Eclipse's handicap mark would suggest she'll be up against it but on some of her home work she's capable of running well at this level.
Mick Channon, trainer of Dan's Dream
We were chuffed with her last run, we got mugged on the line. She seems in great form. We're coming back in trip but we think she'll like the ground, so we thought we had to give it a go. The trip worries me a little bit but she's got speed.
Denise Foster, trainer of Julia's Magic
She's in great form. We were very happy with her run at Naas last time when she was staying on at the finish, so the extra furlong should suit. Hopefully the ground will dry out as that would help.
John Oxx, trainer of Mm Sixsevei
She won her maiden very easily on testing ground early last season and hasn't run since. We need to start her off and, while conditions will be different, we should learn more about her.
Willie McCreery, trainer of Lethal Promise
She's in good form and we're looking forward to stepping her up in grade after her two Listed wins. The ground should be fine for her.
Kevin Ryan, trainer of Queen Jo Jo
She's in good form after her win at Nottingham. We always knew she would improve for her run and the ground has come right for her. We're very happy with her.
What do our tipsters say?
Athasi Stakes second Dan's Dream has to be taken seriously, but 5f Naas Listed winner SOFFIA may have too much for her. Also worth considering is the only other runner with an official rating in three figures, improving three-year-old Lethal Promise. Queen Jo Jo could challenge for a share of the money.
