It is funny how things that seemed disastrous at the time turn out not to be quite so bad in the light of subsequent events.

Think of Andrea Belotti, who must have thought his world had ended when his penalty was saved in a shootout at Wembley in July.

Yet just a few minutes later he was celebrating as his Italian teammates succeeded where he failed, three Englishmen lived up to the national stereotype from 12 yards and the Azzurri were European champions.
