The draw, the points and the prizes: how the Shergar Cup works
With the four teams expanded from three to four riders this year and a format that is only used once a year, here is our guide to how Shergar Cup day will unfold.
Points scoring
Each of the eight races is worth 15 points to both the winning rider and his or her team, with ten to the runner-up and then seven, five and three down to fifth place.
Should a non-runner be declared and no reserve is available, the jockey and their team will both receive four points, while any horses involved in a dead-heat will share the points equally for both places (eg a dead-heat for third and fourth will be worth six points to each of the two runners).
The Shergar Cup will be awarded to the team with the most points after all eight races, while the highest scoring individual jockey will be presented with the Silver Saddle, which is run in memory of the late Alistair Haggis, one of the event's most ardent supporters during his time with the International Racing Bureau.
How the horses are allocated
Once declarations have been registered the ten runners in each race are ranked before a mathematical model is employed to ensure an even spread of individual jockeys and teams and make the playing field as even as possible.
