The blistering Battaash, who became a standing dish on the fourth day of Glorious Goodwood, was always going to get a mention this week, but it might have come as a surprise he was the name on Frankie Dettori's lips immediately after Wednesday's Qatar Sussex Stakes.

Dettori, who finished a well-held fifth on Angel Bleu in the Group 1, of course meant to say Baaeed, but it's understandable he instead blurted out Battaash, another Shadwell superstar who won the King George Qatar Stakes () a record four times from 2017 to 2020 and even when beaten in it last year dominated the headlines.

He had, being a gelding and thus not whisked off to stud like so many stars, become a people's horse and you could almost set your watch by the Charlie Hills-trained speedster, who lit up Goodwood with his scorching displays, one of which yielded a course record for the five-furlong strip in 2020.
