In a season plagued by small fields like no other, the sight of a four-runner Grade 1 at Aintree's flagship meeting might have brought more than a whiff of resignation.

No solemn expressions are necessary when it comes to the Betway Mildmay Novices' Chase (2.55), however, as it serves up a spellbinding clash of future stars not even the Cheltenham Festival could muster.

That wet Wednesday at the festival wasn't all bad, you know. Bravemansgame's last-minute absence from the Brown Advisory triple-header with L'Homme Presse and Ahoy Senor was a blow at the time, but on the flipside it stretched out the anticipation until Aintree.
