Seconds out, round two! Gold Mount and Raheen House rematch in Silver Cup

John Smith’s Silver Cup Stakes (Group 3) | 1m6f | ITV/RTV

What difference does a month make?

Easy one this, isn't it? How can you oppose Gold Mount, who beat Raheen House readily over course and distance four weeks ago.

There was more than two lengths between them at the line and they reoppose on the same terms so surely the winner, who was having his first race since moving back to Britain from Hong Kong with a view to a crack at the Melbourne Cup, will collect again?

Trainer Ian Williams certainly hopes so and said: "He's got plenty in his favour. He's a track winner and though the ground will be completely different to last time it won't be as fast as Hong Kong.

"He's a nice horse with a big future and this will probably be his last run in the UK."

A strong pace suited the last-to-first Gold Mount last time and Raheen House is open to improvement as that was his first run for nearly eight months and first since being gelded and switching yards.

Trainer William Haggas said: "He's in good form and this looks the right race for him. He should enjoy the galloping track and we're hopeful."

Will anyone deny John Gosden another weekend Group race?

John Gosden has been almost unbeatable at the highest level over the last few weekends, winning no fewer than five Group races.

Group 1 stars Enable and Too Darn Hot have been the headline acts for the former champion trainer, whose only chance of keeping the run going today is with the aptly named Weekender.

The five-year-old was runner-up to stablemate Muntahaa in the Ebor over this course and distance last August and looked as good as ever when landing a conditions event at Chelmsford in commanding fashion in May.

"He likes it at York and has form at the track and hopefully he can run a nice race in this and head to the Ebor," Gosden said.

"He's not the flashiest at home but has been pleasing in his work."

Can anything else get into the shake-up?

The top three in the betting look clear of the rest at the weights, with Ebor third Sea The Lion 8lb worse off for the length and three-quarters that runner-up Weekender beat him last August.

That said, he improved his best Racing Post rating by 4lb when a close second under topweight in a handicap at the Curragh last month and is clearly still on the up.

Trainer Jarlath Fahey said: "Everything is good. He travelled over well and has settled in well. He ran very well in the Ebor last year, so we know he handles the track, and the ground will be perfect for him. He came out of his Curragh run well and we're here to give it a go."

Red Verdon was second in four Group races last summer but Kelly’s Dino has more recent claims, having won last Saturday’s Old Newton Cup at Haydock.

Karl Burke steps him up from handicap company and said: “He put up a great performance at Haydock. He's always been a horse with a lot of ability; he's had a wind operation and that's really helped him. Hopefully he can progress.

"This is over the Ebor distance and that's the race we really want to get him into. He's the sort who can cope with a quick run and he'll have no problem with stepping back up to a mile and three-quarters."
