Say hello, wave goodbye. The chorus and title of Soft Cell’s 1982 new wave hit seems accurate when contemplating this weekend’s excellent bundle of action.

Autumn is here, the days are shorter and the nights longer. The November Handicap at Doncaster next month officially brings the curtain down on the Flat, but Saturday’s Racing Post Trophy card, also on Town Moor, is the last chance for Group 1 honours in Britain this year.

So as we start our goodbyes to the Flat for another winter, we could also be saying hello to a Classic star of the future for next spring and beyond.
