In February, the Racing Post was offered a spot for a female employee to ride in the Magnolia Cup, a ladies' only charity race in support of Wellbeing of Women, taking place at Goodwood on Thursday. Reporter Kitty Trice took up the challenge and has been practising for the big day ever since. Kitty is set to ride the Chris Gordon-trained eight-year-old Alketios against the likes of former Olympic champion Victoria Pendleton and model Vogue Williams in the 5½f contest. Here, Kitty describes her feelings as the big day arrives.

Since I started the Magnolia Cup journey back in February this year, I have learned a huge amount about the art of riding a racehorse and, despite a couple of hairy moments along the way, I would not change it for the world.

I would be lying if I said I was not pretty nervous but I'm also feeling incredibly excited about the fantastic challenge ahead.

My sessions on the gallops at the yards of Pat Phelan and Chris Gordon have taught me the importance of keeping calm – thoroughbreds can be especially sensitive and reactive.

So what is my strategy for the race? How will I cope with the atmosphere of the day?

The fact is I can only focus on how I ride and where I position myself and Alketios in the race. While winning would undoubtedly be one of my lifetime highlights, the fact I'm lining up and taking part means everything to me.

My family and friends will be there to support me and, it has to be said, I would not have got this far without their unwavering support.
