Returning Romanised faces dangers aplenty in Minstrel repeat bid
Paddy Power Minstrel Stakes (Group 2) | 7f | RTV & RTE2
One of the most important horses in Ireland, Romanised will attempt to record back-to-back victories in this race, but will be doing so off the back of a hefty absence.
Not only has Romanised been a horse of a lifetime for Ken Condon, but in winning the Irish 2,000 Guineas in 2018, he proved the majesty that comes with winning Classics is not necessarily confined to the larger operations.
Romanised has since established himself as a high-class miler, having landed the Prix Jacques le Marois before being an unlucky loser in the Prix du Moulin after he won this race last term.
Romanised is 8lb clear of his nearest rival Lancaster House on official ratings, but Condon is in cautious mood.
He said: "He seems well and we're very happy with how he has been training. We're delighted to be getting his season underway.
"He's in good shape but I'm sure he'll take the run. If he runs accordingly and we're happy with where we are in three or four weeks, the Prix Jacques le Marois is his big aim and all roads lead back to that."
Lancaster House has the benefit of a win over course and distance under his belt. Add Surrounding, Gustavus Weston and Buffer Zone into the mix, and there are any amount of stumbling blocks for the returning Romanised.
Aidan O'Brien, who has three runners in the race, said: "Lancaster House is slowly stepping up in grade and we were delighted with him the last day.
"He has been well since and we're looking forward to him. Precious Moments is a good hardy filly and we're hoping she gets black-type. We're hoping for the same with Love Locket."
