The story For any young jockey starting out, establishing a career is tough and treacherous but, given the adversity Connor Murtagh has already faced, he should be well equipped to handle whatever comes his way.

Murtagh, 17, has had three major heart operations, the first of which when he was only ten days old. His last piece of open-heart surgery was in September, and with that out of the way he has wasted little time in making an impact in the saddle since starting in January.

The son of trainer and former jockey Barry, and younger brother of conditional jockey Lorcan, Murtagh rode a winner at the first attempt for his father at the start of last month, then another for boss Richard Fahey later in March.

Now, on his 11th ride under rules, Murtagh gets the opportunity to ride in the Betway Lincoln, partnering Third Time Lucky for Fahey.

According to the betting, Third Time Lucky is no back number at a general 14-1, and was two lengths behind favourite Yuften at Ascot last October when fifth in the Balmoral Handicap.

He says I can't wait. If you told me this was happening six months ago I'd have ripped your arm off. I wouldn't have believed I'd be riding in the Lincoln.

Paul Hanagan and Tony Hamilton are around, and all the lads here [at Fahey's yard] really help you. I'm learning something new nearly every day and they've really brought my riding on loads since I started here.

Third Time Lucky should go really well, and I'm very grateful for the ride.
