Forget a flying dismount, Frankie Dettori can be forgiven for giving Inspiral and Lezoo a huge hug and kiss when he meets up with them again at Newmarket.

The two fillies provided the only moments of joy for racing’s most famous fifty-something at a time when his world seemed to be falling apart last month.

While the prime minister had been in office for less than three years when his allies turned on him this week, Dettori had served John Gosden for a fair while longer.
