Punting pointers for the Goffs sales race as Richard Fahey runs four
2.25 York
Goffs UK Premier Yearling Stakes | 6f, 2yo | ITV/RTV
Richard Fahey, Richard Hannon, William Haggas and Kevin Ryan account for the last nine runnings of this race and all bid for more glory in the £300,000 contest.
Fahey, who was successful last year with Red Balloons and with Wootton Bassett in 2010, has the biggest team with four, headed by market leader Show Me Show Me, third to Liberty Beach in the Molecomb at Goodwood last month.
Paddy Mathers' mount finished a head second in the Super Sprint at Newbury before Goodwood and is joint top-rated at the weights with the Karl Burke-trained Rayong.
Fahey said: "Show Me Show Me has a great chance if he stays. He’s finished off well in all his races but the 3lb penalty for his Brocklesby victory is crazy."
National League has improved on Racing Post Ratings on each of his three starts, most recently winning a novice event at Chester and is ridden by Paul Hanagan, who has two wins in the race, on Wootton Bassett and Tasleet for Haggas.
Spygate, racing in last year's winning colours of Clipper Logistics chairman and Leeds fan Steve Parkin and Corndavon Lad complete Fahey’s quartet.
Fahey said: "I like National League – he’s improving all the time but the sharp six furlongs might catch him out. Spygate is a good-looking horse who could progress but has a lot to find on ratings.
"Corndavon Lad has been disappointing. We really liked him early on but he's yet to deliver and I’m hoping a visor has a positive effect."
Go high on the draw conundrum
Eight of the last ten runnings have been won by horses berthed in double-figure stalls – a stat that favours the chances of Hannon’s leading hope Mums Tipple drawn in 14.
None of the last ten winners landed this valuable prize on a second start but Mums Tipple looked a smart prospect when travelling best and scoring by a neck at Ascot on debut – form that is working out well with the fourth and fifth winning novice events since.
Hannon, who also runs three-race maiden Cheat in a bid to win the race for a third time in four years, said: "Mums Tipple was very pleasing on debut and he's an improving horse. This is a smart race but he's a nice, strong two-year-old and we'd like to think he can go well.
"Cheat ran his best race last time and is getting better. Hopefully he can put in a decent effort."
What they say
Joseph O'Brien, trainer of Latin Five
He was disappointing at Naas but is better than that. There's very good prize-money and hopefully he can pick up some of it.
George Scott, trainer of Raahy
He was a little unfortunate at Goodwood as he missed the break and was always on the back foot. The return to six furlongs should suit and he has a good draw. He has an obvious chance, deserves his position towards the head of the market and I’m hoping his experience will stand him in good stead.
Karl Burke, trainer of Rayong
He has looked a promising prospect. Silvestre [de Sousa] got off him at Deauville and felt he would likely improve for an extra furlong. He’s by Mayson and so, with the ground drying out as the week goes on, I didn’t want to wait too long as he’s also entered in the Julia Graves Roses Stakes.
Eve Johnson Houghton, trainer of Sword Beach
He ran really well at Goodwood last time and if they go quickly it should play to his strengths as he knows how to weave his way through. Hopefully he can pick them off late.
Adam Ryan, son and assistant to Kevin Ryan, trainer of Barbarella
She's improved with each run and will need to improve again to go close. It's a big prize and a race we have done well in, though, and she has a chance.
John Quinn, trainer of Mia Diva
She ran disappointingly at Newmarket and I do not know why. She just didn't run her race. Her previous runs were very good and she's in a good place.
