Punchestown faithful to send Honeysuckle off on her holidays with a raucous roar

Although next season will be Honeysuckle’s farewell tour, she will roll into Punchestown on Friday to complete a whirlwind campaign that has felt like an incessant outpouring of appreciation for a mare who has won the hearts of jump racing fans by dint of her exploits before, during and after the pandemic.

Okay, we’re taking a slight liberty there, but it feels like it might be over so let’s just run with that while we can. Before Covid-19 turned the world upside down, Honeysuckle’s legend was only in its infancy.

She had snared a first Hatton’s Grace Hurdle and a first Irish Champion Hurdle, but, although they were triumphs that had monumental historical resonance for Rachael Blackmore, they weren’t significant firsts at the time for Honeysuckle. Just awesome victories.
