Proven talent or unexposed potential? Charterhouse seeks consecutive Listed wins

Tuesday: 4.20 Listowel
Edmund & Josie Whelan Memorial Listowel Stakes (Listed Race) | 1m1f | 3yo+ | RTV/TG4

A 3lb penalty for winning the Listed Vincent O'Brien Ruby Stakes last time may not be enough to halt the progress of Charterhouse, who is in the form of his life, in Listowel's day-three feature.

It was a clear career-best performance from the John Murphy-trained four-year-old at Killarney last month, and his mark of 105 is 5lb clear of his nearest rival on ratings Casanova.

A wide draw didn't help the Ado McGuinness-trained challenger when finishing down the field in a premier handicap at the Curragh on Irish Champions Weekend, but a reproduction of his third in this race last year should put him in the picture again.

Joseph O'Brien struck in the 2021 running with Visualisation and holds solid claims again this time with unexposed four-year-old Dante's Pass, a winner at this meeting 12 months ago.

He has only been seen once this term when disappointing in a Curragh premier handicap in June and would prefer a softer surface than is likely to be on offer, though.

Dropping in trip should play to the strengths of well-drawn filly Alizarine, breaking from stall one for Shane Foley and Jessica Harrington.

She appeared to run out of petrol on soft ground over 1m4f up Galway's stiff hill last time, but her previous second to Galleria Borghese in a Listed Oaks Trial at Naas in June was encouraging.

Willie McCreery won back-to-back runnings of this race in 2015 and 2016, and has his first runners since then when saddling Self Belief and Coill Na Sionainne.

His best chance lies with the former, who created a strong impression when winning on his only start at the Curragh in June – and that maiden has worked out extremely well.

Runner-up Paris Peacock has won Listed and Group 3 events on her last two starts, while Free To Party (fourth), Lecale's Destiny (fifth) and Coreman (sixth) have each won maidens since.

Charterhouse is the proven article, but the unexposed Self Belief rates a major danger.

What they say

John Murphy, trainer of Charterhouse and Venice Biennale
Charterhouse has been having a good year and is in great form so we're looking forward to running him. It would be lovely if we could pick up some black type with Venice Biennale.

Ado McGuinness, trainer of Casanova
On ratings, he has a good chance. He ran very well in this race last year and he's battle-hardened now. A little drop of rain wouldn't go astray for him. He deserves to pick up a decent pot before the year is out.

Joseph O'Brien, trainer of Dante's Pass and Neptune Rock
Dante's Pass has won at Listowel before and any rain would be a help. He's got a nice draw [in stall 3] so hopefully he runs well. Neptune Rock has some good form and it would be nice if she could at least pick up some black type.

Jessica Harrington, trainer of Himalayan Beauty and Alizarine
Hopefully this race should suit Alizarine, dropping in trip and going left-handed on a flat track. It was probably just the trip at Galway last time that caught her out. We'd like to try to get some black type with Himalayan Beauty.
