One jockey, one trainer, one horse and one race to watch on day three
One jockey
It is a big day for Kieran O’Neill who bids for a first success at the meeting aboard Sandringham Stakes favourite African Dream (4.40).
O’Neill has partnered the filly, trained by John Gosden, on her three starts and she races off a low weight after a narrow defeat at Newbury on her return last week.
African Dream is one of several potential improvers in the 18-runner event but the market suggests she has strong claims of providing O’Neill with a day to savour.
One trainer
Andrew Balding bids to build on his tally of six winners at the meeting with a seven-strong team on day three, headed by Wolferton Stakes favourite Fox Tal (1.50) and Chesham Stakes market principal Bright Devil (3.00).
Fox Tal brings the best form into the Wolferton. He finished a close fourth behind Magical in the Qipco Champion Stakes last year and is unexposed after six starts. There is a lot to like about his chances.
Bright Devil made a successful debut at Newmarket and champion jockey Oisin Murphy maintains the partnership. The form is hard to weigh up at this stage of the season but he is one of three in the eight-runner field that have winning form.
One horse
Stradivarius (3.35) will be firmly in the spotlight for a third successive year as he bids for a hat-trick in the feature Gold Cup on day three.
The John Gosden-trained star stayer returned with an encouraging third in the Hurworth Bloodstock-sponsored Coronation Cup behind Ghaiyyath and is odds-on to strike again under Frankie Dettori.
The betting suggests Technician, a top-level winner in the Prix Royal Oak at Longchamp in October, and 2018 Melbourne Cup scorer Cross Counter are his main threats.
One race
Lightly-raced types dominate the betting for the Britannia Stakes with three of the first four in the market arriving off just two career starts.
Favourite Finest Sound (4.10), trained by Simon and Ed Crisford, is marginally more experienced and is well in after a ready success on his handicap debut at Haydock.
A high draw is a positive for Finest Sound, as it is for course winner Enemy, although the same cannot be said of Qipco 2,000 Guineas seventh Starcat in stall one.
