It is rare for novice chasers to be at a career cross-roads on just their second start, but when they were as talented over hurdles, and as disappointing on debut, as Old Guard was when pulled up at Newton Abbot this month – then plans go up in the air.

As his trainer Paul Nicholls said on Monday: "There's no plans set just yet. We just want to get tomorrow out of the way and we'll see where he goes from there."
