Norfolk hero The Lir Jet bids for more Group glory in Prix Robert Papin

The defection of Coventry Stakes winner Nando Parrado may have robbed this race of its headline match-up but there is still the prospect of seeing another impressive Royal Ascot hero in The Lir Jet step up to six furlongs.
The son of Prince Of Lir took almost every yard of the five-furlong Norfolk Stakes to reel in Golden Pal, while his wellbeing since then has persuaded trainer Michael Bell to take in this historic race, run for the first time at Chantilly.
"He hit the line very well and galloped out round the bend at Ascot, which is always a good sign. It definitely looked like a step up in trip would be a benefit.
"He's a straightforward horse. He got a lead at Ascot and he made the running on his debut, while he goes on any ground."
Qatar Racing's retained rider Oisin Murphy is also unconcerned about how a four-runner race could play out.
"I've sat on him since Ascot and he seems very well. Michael Bell has been very pleased with the horse." said Murphy. "The extra furlong will be absolutely fine. He's a very fast horse but very rideable so I feel the trip should be no issue."
Ventura Tormenta was making his debut when finishing six and a half lengths behind The Lir Jet in the Norfolk but put the experience to good use when scoring at Yarmouth a fortnight later over this trip.
An extra furlong seemed to stretch him in the Superlative Stakes at Newmarket last Saturday but when a small field seemed assured, Richard Hannon and owners Middleham Park Racing had no hesitation in supplementing him here.
"There were only four in there and we felt we'd certainly be competitive with at least a couple of them," said Middleham Park's Tim Palin. "He was last off the bridle in the Superlative and has come out of it fine, whereas he was a little bit taken off his feet in the Norfolk.
"The more sun they get and the less water they put on, the better for us. The Lir Jet sets a very high standard and whether we can aspire to that, time will tell."
Having bolted up by seven lengths at Deauville, Axdavali was beaten by Livachope in the Group 3 Prix du Bois, although trainer Yann Barberot believes the son of Goken can be marked up for that run.
"Coming out of the stalls he had a nasty bang on the heel which is why he pulled early and was unable to get cover," said Barberot.
"The time was good and we're hopeful. This race was always 1,100 meters [five and a half furlongs] but if he can be hidden away I think he'll last home over 1,200 meters [six furlongs]."
The quartet is rounded off by another supplemented runner, and one almost impossible to position in relation to the other three.
Tiger Tanaka is unbeaten in four starts over trips ranging from six furlongs to a mile, three of which have been in claiming races and all by wide margins.
She also provides the biggest opportunity for her young jockey Jessica Marcialis.
"We supplemented her when it became obvious there would be a small field," said Marcialis. "She is very difficult to judge and in terms of the trip, all I can say is that she stays a mile but is always very keen to get on with it in the mornings and feels more like a sprinter."
Marcialis is the partner of trainer Charley Rossi and said of her own feelings ahead of the big day: "It's beginning to dawn on me I will be riding in a Group 2 at Chantilly, something I never expected to happen. It's a mad entry but we're a mad team and the owner has always insisted I ride the filly, whatever the race."
