Come 4pm on Saturday the British contenders for next month's Cheltenham Festival could be standing a little taller, looking around at each other and believing just that little bit more.

That's not to say they can actually win the annual battle with the Irish challengers – right now Britain is to the Prestbury Cup what Italy is to the Six Nations – but as with Italy there are signs that this year might not be as one-sided.

The strength of the British team lies in its bright young hopes. Bravemansgame, Edwardstone, Third Time Lucki and the army of talented novices in the Betfair Hurdle might just be up to toppling the Mullins, Elliott and De Bromhead battalions in their respective divisions.
