Best of the rest on ITV4: trainer views on key runners on Newbury's evening card
Even as eyecatching defeats go there was something pretty remarkable about the way Moll Davis was constantly denied a run at Newcastle on the second day after racing resumed, with the five-and-a-quarter-length margin of defeat to Medal Winner telling only a fraction of the tale.
Now George Scott looks for swift compensation for the four-year-old daughter of Kingman in the MansionBet's Beaten By A Head Handicap (6.25) over 1m2f, with Moll Davis looking to give weight all round to ten rivals.
"It was obviously a frustrating start to her season but it was nobody's fault, these things happen," said Scott. "We're hoping that she can have a clear shot this time. The track and the predicted ground will be ideal for her.
"It's vital that she gets her toe in and the only time she has run disappointingly was at Yarmouth on rock-hard ground. She seems to have come out of Newcastle well and in a sense it was a nice easy introduction to her season."
Course-and-distance winner Just The Man and the Alan King-trained Aweedram are expected to provide main market opposition.
One hurdle at a time for Ascot entry Blue Mist
Roger Charlton expects to have a select squad for next week's royal meeting, although the weather may play a part in determining if Blue Mist is on the teamsheet.
Ground permitting, Blue Mist's first priority is the MansionBet's Royal Ascot Special Handicap (5.25), although two excellent efforts last term in big-field handicaps over the straight 7f at Ascot means that plan B has not yet entirely been discarded.
Charlton said: "Blue Mist seems very well. He runs unless there is a deterioration in the ground. He is also in the Buckingham Palace and the Hunt Cup at Ascot next week, but we'll jump the hurdles as they come along."
Jackstar has the benefit of an outing having finished second at Newcastle last week and Tom Dascombe is hopeful he can go one better here.
"He is a horse that we always thought a lot of," said Dascombe. "I still don't think we've really got where we thought we would with him, but he ran well at Newcastle. I didn't think he quite stayed there. He came to win his race and looked like the winner before just getting caught in the last 50 yards. I hope this will suit him better."
Menuisier goes handicap route with Longchamp hero Into Faith
Dascombe also looks to have found a good opportunity for Breathalyze, who faces 11 rivals in the It's Not Rocket Science With MansionBet Handicap (4.55) for three-year-olds over the straight mile.
Dascombe said: "He's an interesting one because although he won around Chester last year, Richard Kingscote kept saying 'he hates it here, run him on a straight track'. He was doing his job and he's a horse who has been ready for a while but this was the first race that was really available to him. He is fit and well and I'm looking forward to running him."
Society Lion could have any amount of improvement after just two starts for Sir Michael Stoute, while Into Faith has already enjoyed one big payday having landed the Arqana sales race at Longchamp on Arc weekend.
"He seems in good form and is rated 90, so finding races is not easy at the moment," said trainer David Menuisier. "It was this or the Diomed Stakes the next day and it goes without saying that this is easier than a Group 3.
"The trip will be ideal and I'm hoping it will rain a bit more. My horses have all shown that they will improve for a run. It's a decent race and it's always difficult carrying top weight when you run in a handicap for the first time, but we'll give it a go."
