When Mozart made the running in the 2001 Irish 2,000 Guineas, he did so as a 20-1 shot who had been beaten at odds-on in lesser company on his first two starts of the year.

He was beginning to look a busted flush. Then he nearly blitzkrieged the Classic field under Seamie Heffernan at the Curragh, splitting stablemates Black Minnaloushe and Minardi.

It began to dawn on Aidan O'Brien that Mozart was being miscast. The Ballydoyle genius dropped him to 7f for the Jersey Stakes, and he duly clung on at Royal Ascot after again setting a ferocious gallop.
