McCain tradition remains 40 years on as National legend remembered

Carlisle launches its jumps season with a Red Rum-themed card that celebrates the close association the course enjoyed with the three-time Grand National winner.

It is 40 years since Red Rum enjoyed his final success at the Cumbria venue, which was the regular choice of trainer Ginger McCain to give 'Rummy' his seasonal pipeopener.

McCain’s son Donald, a Grand National winner with Ballabriggs in 2011, has maintained the tradition and is represented in all but one of the seven races on the card.
