Listed Snowdrop the main attraction as ITV4 shows four all-weather races
The world was a very different place the last time there was racing in Britain and Ireland over Easter – and the racing programme was a little different too.
The Easter Monday Kempton card, which forms part of a new and welcome double-header on ITV4 with Fairyhouse, was run on Easter Saturday in 2019.
However, very much lending an air of familiarity around the feature Unibet Listed Snowdrop Fillies' Stakes (4.02) are trainer Ed Walker and owner Bjorn Nielsen, whose famous black silks were carried to victory in the race two years ago.
Four-year-old Amniarix is bidding to follow on from the success of Agrotera for the Lambourn duo, and she is on a four-timer after a prolific all-weather campaign.
Walker said: "We've had this race in mind for Amniarix since she won at Wolverhampton in January, and as she's very well bred it's important she gets some black type.
"We did look at all-weather finals day, but the race for her was over seven furlongs and we feel she's better suited to a mile."
Top-rated in the ten-strong field is the Amanda Perrett-trained Lavender's Blue, who earned black type last season, most recently when runner-up at this level at Lingfield in October.
Lavender's Blue had some tough assignments last year, including at Group 2 level at Royal Ascot, and is reunited with Robert Havlin, who has some nice chances across the Kempton card.
The jockey said said: "Lavender’s Blue goes well fresh and Amanda is well used to getting one ready first time. She's top-rated in the race and has plenty of class."
John and Thady Gosden field the lightly raced Leafhopper in a race the stable won last season with Nazeef when it was run in June following racing's return after lockdown.
The daughter of Dark Angel won her sole all-weather start at Wolverhampton last November.
John Gosden said: "It looks a competitive race and it's a jump up in class for Leafhopper, but the plan is to get some black type, which is important for these fillies."
Fellow Newmarket trainer Marco Botti fields two in a bid to win the race for a fourth time, having won it three times consecutively from 2015.
The highest rated of the pair is Made In Italy, who has a bit of class about her having finished third in last year's Italian Oaks.
Botti said: "Made In Italy won a handicap over a mile at Newcastle last month on her comeback and did it well considering they went no pace. She's probably a mile-and-a-quarter filly but should be fine over a mile in a big field like this."
Botti also fields Pretty In Grey, who finished third at this level at Dundalk in November on her last start.
The trainer added: "Pretty In Grey has a bit to do on the numbers, but she's run all her best races at Kempton, so hopefully she can pick up further black type."
Fresh from his triumph with Khuzaam on all-weather finals day at Lingfield on Friday, Roger Varian seeks further success with Fooraat, who is unbeaten on the all-weather.
Varian said: "This has been her target for a while and we've been pleased with her preparation. She likes the all-weather and ran some decent races in defeat on surfaces that didn't suit her last summer."
Varian also looks to have a live chance in another of the four ITV4 races at Kempton with the unexposed Postileo in the Unibet 15 To Go Queen's Prize (4.35).
The son of Galileo looks sure to go off favourite for the seven-runner contest after his impressive win over 1m6f at Salisbury last August.
Postileo is stepping up in trip but Varian is hopeful that will play to his strengths.
He said: "Postileo was a progressive sort last year and got the hang of things at Salisbury, where he won nicely. He should get this trip this year and this looks a nice starting point."
Chief danger looks to be fellow Newmarket-trained Starczewski, who is on a hat-trick after wins over this course and distance and at Wolverhampton.
Trainer David Simcock said: "Starczewski has done well this winter after coming back from injury but this is a better race. The race revolves around the Varian horse as he’s unexposed, but we’re happy with our fellow."
